The Power of Myth in Retirement
(Spring 2025

The problem in retirement is the body has long sense reached its mid-life height of power and is in decline.  One of the psychological problems we face is the reality of growing older and the fear of death.  But as we start to age, we start to identify ourselves less with the body, which is falling away and more with the consciousness in our body.

The first article in this winter newsletter is not based on research per se, but is more my thoughts about the transition we undergo when we retire.  The second article talks about the four temperaments discussed in "Please Understand Me" by David Keirsey and Marilyn Bates.  I thought you might like to see which one you resonate with the most

Inviting Heightened Levels of Intuition into Your Retirement  (Summer 2024

Do we want a retirement full of learning and promise that includes time for self-development and spiritual growth?  Or, do we want a retirement focused on our waning physical and mental powers and social uselessness as our mainstream culture portrays us?  Awakening and developing our intuitive levels of knowing is a powerful movement in our desired direction.

The Extraordinary Rise and Appeal of Living Solo  (Spring 2024

A revolution is happening in our way of life.  Going solo, living on own's own, has become a dominant way of living in urban areas for all age groups including young adults, midlife people, and elders.  According to Dr. Klinenberg's research, in most major U.S. cities, 40-46% are solo dwellers compared to a mere 9% in 1950, who were seen as sick or immoral.  And women are leading the way.

Retirement as a Mystical Path  (Summer 2023

After the honeymoon phase of retirement ends, many of us may be left feeling unsettled and yearning for a sense of purpose especially if we see the number of possible years ahead of us.  If we follow our yearnings, a new path or stage of life begins to unfold before us.

Seeking Diversity in Retirement

Many of us seek meaning and purpose in retirement, but mistakenly think it is one thing that we must find to be happy.  This approach puts a lot of pressure on us to find that one thing that will meet all our needs and expectations.

How to Grow a More Creative Retirement

Did Your Former Workplace Encourage Your Creativity?  (Fall 2020)

According to Webster's dictionary, creativity is the ability to bring something new into being.  It also includes the ability to solve problems in new and original ways.  Creativity is often confused with being artistic, but it is not the same thing.  We can create in any medium not just with the arts.  For example, we can be creative in preparing food, or in landscaping the garden, or remodeling the house, or fixing up a car.

Your Retirement--After a Mainstream Career or an Alternative One  (Spring 2020)

When we retire, the challenges we face vary greatly depending upon the work we did prior to retirement.  I have found that people tend to fall into two distinct paths--those who choose a mainstream career or those who pursue an alternative vocation.  Think of these paths as two types of roads.  (See images on left.)  The mainstream career is like a freeway or expressway.  And the alternative vocation is like a country road that winds and turns as it follows the contours of the land.

Over 50% of retirees live on $25,000 or less a year.  And almost all of us upon retiring experience an increase in time, but a loss or decline in our income.  So living with "intentional simplicity" becomes a challenge and blessing for many of us.  (And time is a key ingredient.)

7 Helpful Things to Know about Aging
(Fall 2019)

In doing my research on aging, I came across these seven findings I thought you might find interesting.  Most (except where noted) come from Prof. Robert Atchley's book called "Social Forces and Aging."  A great read.  These findings dovetail nicely with my research and experience with Finding Your Life's Work.
